Background

Sukhothai was the first kingdom of Thailand, approximately from around year 1700 B.E. The archaeological discoveries show that people, have lived in the area since Prehistoric time. The study and decipher of the stone tablets and the old records indicate that when Phor Khun Sinawathom the ruler of Sukhothai die Khom Samad Klon Lampong. The Khom nobleman was sent to rule over Sukhothai. Phor Khun Pha Muang a son of the dead ruler who ruled Muang Rad together with his friend, Pho Khunbang Klang Tao who was the ruler of Muang Bang Yang seized the power and chased the Khom Samad Khon Lampong out of Sukhothai. Then Phor Khun Pha Muang helped established Phor Khun Bang Klang Tao as the king of Sukhothai, given his old name Sri Intra Bodintratitaya to his friend. Thus the first king of Sukhothai name is called Phor Khun Intratitaya. It was the beginning of Pra Ruang Dynasty.
The golden age of Sukhothai was during the reign of Phor Khun Ramkamhaeng, the third king of Sukhothai Kingdom. It is said There is fish in the river, there is rice in the field, who want to trade elephant, so trade, who want to trade horse so trade. King Ramkhamhaeng was a brilliant soldier and administrator. He has created Lai Sue Thai the Thai alphabet as we use today.
Sukhothai has boundary connected to Uttaradit and Phare to the north, Phitsanulok and Uttaradit to the east, Phitsanulok, Kamphangphet to the south. The important river is the Yom River. There are 9 districts: Muang Sukhothai, Kong Klailart, Khirimat, Thung Saliem, Barn Dan Lan Hoi, Sisatchanalai, Sisamrong, Sawan Khalok, Si Nakhon.
